European Languages

epiStoa tries to increase the appreciation of the ancient world and languages, Latin and Greek, through various activities.

Most European languages show a noticeable influence of Latin and ancient Greek in their vocabularies. Also, neologisms very often make use of Latin and Greek words.

In many frequently used words, like street, state, union or virus, the ancient origin is not evident at first glance.

Other words such as anthology, ecology, economy, infection or inflation, which sound similar in many languages, clearly have ancient origins. There are myriads of them having a Greek origin (just a few examples) and just as many having a Latin or a combined Latin-Greek origin (e.g., automobile).

Last but not least, the terminology in each and every field of science is strongly based on Latin or Greek. This is particularly evident and important in medicine and laws, but not only there.
